I don't recommend you gel because it messes hair, better use a cream (I use the Pantene one, for straight hair, It's cheap and ok).

basically, emo hair is long at the front (you have to have an emo fringe! you may need to grow it) and shorter at the back.

you straighten your fringe so it covers your eyes

you use hair gel to spike up the back

so its straight at the front and messed up at the back.

and of course if you're really sure you want to go the whole way...dye it black!
